Sun Outages in Fall

You may notice Fall Sun Outages around this time of year. This natural phenomenon happens twice each year when a satellite and a receiving earth station come directly inline with the sun. This positioning causes programming interruptions as the sun’s energy overpowers the C and Ku band signals transmitted by the satellites.
Most outages will occur between noon and 3:30 PM with a few outside of this time frame. We will experience anything from slight signal degradation to complete signal loss. The severity of the outage depends on the location and type of equipment.
The outages during this cycle will be gradual beginning with short and minor interruptions on the first and last days of the cycle, reaching a peak during mid-cycle when the sun is located directly behind the satellite.
